We were just strolling on the pier after checking into the Portola Hotel and it got late so we figured we would find a place to eat on the pier. We are so glad we stopped here as it was such a beautiful experience. It was like a true old school Italian Style or Rat Pack era style restaurant. The service was amazing starting from the outside host to the waiters and bus boys. If prices are an issue for you than go inland because the piers prices are all expensive. Anyway, we had pasta and chicken Parmigiana, rib eye steak with asparagus and double baked potato, sampler appetizer and a bowl of clam chowder. Every thing was delicious! Streak was perfect medium rare and most importantly the service was excellent. They had plenty to staff. I loved the dim lighting and Big Band Era style music. Reminded me of my grandparents. I would definitely come again, especially on a date or with a group of friends or adult family. Between the service and quality of food I didn’t care about anything else.

We’ve been visiting Old Fisherman’s Grotto each time we stay in Monterey several times a year. This restaurant has exceptional food, amazing ambiance and we are always treated like royalty! It’s fun to be recognized by staff members. We cannot recommend this wonderful experience enough! Try the Ultimate seafood pasta or the Macadamia Nut encrusted Halibut, but never pass on the opportunity to enjoy the best chowder anywhere!

"A place by the sea,
Like the banquets halls
Of long time yore,
The Grotto shines;
The place to be!"

My husband and I choose this restaurant because of the cozy historic atmosphere. We arrived at 5:00 on a weekday and were able to get a booth by the window. The waiter was very friendly and the menu had lots of options. I ordered the jumbo shrimp and they were delicious. They offered a generous portion at a competitive price. We watched the seals play in the ocean as we enjoyed a quiet romantic dinner together. We visit the beautiful city of Monterey often and will add this restaurant to our “favorite” list.

We had dinner at Old Fisherman’s Grotto on Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey and enjoyed a classic seafood dinner experience. We started with a cup of chowder and a Dungeness crab cocktail, both of which were a nice way to begin the meal.
We shared the surf and turf, which included a 5 oz filet, lobster tail, fresh vegetables, and a twice-baked potato. The filet was cooked medium-rare and tender enough to melt in your mouth. The lobster was excellent, though it would have been even better with butter served alongside it.
The twice-baked potato was the weakest part of the meal because it was burnt and too crispy. Even with that, the overall meal was still good, especially the steak, lobster, and fresh vegetables.
I would recommend Old Fisherman’s Grotto for visitors looking for a traditional Fisherman’s Wharf dinner in Monterey.

Had a wonderful experience! Justino A provided amazing service — super friendly, kind, and attentive throughout the meal. The food was excellent; we especially loved the grilled artichoke, oysters, and clam chowder. The ambiance was great and made for an overall fantastic dining experience. Would definitely recommend!

My husband and I ended up in Monterrey at the end of a 4 park, California National Parks tour. This is only my 2nd time visiting Monterrey but we knew we were looking for some local fresh catch. I picked Old Fisherman's Grotto mainly because they claim to be the originators of the 'Monterrey style' clam chowder. Once we got there we were both enticed with the local catch specials instead. I got the macadamia crusted halibut with 2 large coconut shrimps. My husband, the pistachio crusted Cod with rice and a glass of Rodney Strong Cabernet. Everything was wonderful! Angel, our server, was a pro too. Attentive and very knowledgable about the menu, which is extensive. As if we'd have had room for dessert there was more than 10 options, all made in house. Maybe on another trip. The atmosphere is like an old school cozy, cocktails and steaks kind of a vibe overlooking the water.
We are here through tomorrow so we just may return to try their clam chowder in a bread bowl for lunch.
